Withheld was a book designed by myself for Graduate Studio I at ArtCenter. Students were assigned to create a book composed of online articles based off of an episode from the KCET documentary series LOST LA. I chose to focus on an episode based on the photography of Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams, and Toyo Miyatake of Manzanar Internment camps.
In this book, I incorporated my own handwriting and cut-paper designs to suggest the makeshift feeling of Manzanar and to give humanity to the interned. For this course, students were also required to create a promotional Instagram carousel for the book. My carousel features illustrations from the book opening paired with excerpts of the 5th Amendment, containing the rights Japanese-Americans were denied in WWII. Below are spreads from the book and the Instagram carousel.
